Explore soft ground etching with experienced etcher and printmaker Pam Wesolek. This unique form of copper etching involves coating a copper plate with a soft acid-resistant wax. Impressions are then made in the wax by pressing leaves or found objects into it, or by drawing with various tools. This method creates rich textures and patterns, and can be used on its own to create prints with delicate lines and object impressions, or in combination with other etching forms such as hard ground and aquatint. Softground etching is a great technique for anyone who loves experimentation, and no prior etching experience is necessary!

Remarque’s annual juried print exhibition each December is an incredible opportunity to see contemporary prints from around the world, and to see the unexpected common threads running through this collection of pieces that were made in such remote places, by such different people.
This year, we have art from twenty-one states and six different countries, including Finland, Spain, Italy, Ireland, Mexico, and Canada. The breadth of subject matter is impressive, and yet the pieces still speak to each other in meaningful ways. It’s a nice reminder that art is and always has been a way of bringing people together, and even though we have hundreds of different cultures and languages around the world, we all share a common—if unique—vocabulary in visual art. |

Juliana Coles - Corporeal Property: a Body of Work
September 2nd - October 1st, 2022
Remarque presents new works on paper by Albuquerque artist Juliana Coles. Highly detailed, visceral, and raw mixed media works on paper combine figure drawings and hand lettered narrative with collected vintage maps. These cartographic figurative drawings, maps of the interior, serve as tangible evidence of the journey. Lonely figures, compass roses, cartouches, and rhumb lines are tools to navigate the grief of unnecessary losses; you are not here.
The artist will be working on and adding to her installation “The Map Room” during the month of September and encourages the community to bring their own maps, photographs, poems, drawing, writings, notes, as evidence of the journey, documentation of loss, directives of where to go from here. Community event dates are listed below. Please bring copies, as these items will not be returned and become the property of the artist. Calendar of Events:

Blurring the Lines: Exploring the Frontiers of Photography and Printmaking
|
Entry Deadline: 5/22/2022
Remarque Print Workshop & Gallery invites printmakers and photographers from around the world to submit work for our exhibition, “Blurring the Lines: Exploring the Frontiers of Photography and Printmaking” to be held at Remarque Print Workshop and Gallery in Albuquerque, NM from July 8th – August 28th, 2022. “Blurring the Lines” is a call for hand-printed photographic imagery using “alternative processes”, such as: photogravure, photopolymer intaglio, cyanotype, gum bichromate, carbon, salt, lumen, anthotype, gumoil, etc; basically, any alternative to straight digital printing. We are looking for images that explore the boundaries between photography and printmaking and that involve some form of hand-work. The purpose of the show is to present works that incorporate elements of printmaking and of photography and that seek to create a synergy between the two. We hope to showcase the emerging print world that increasingly discards concern for categorical process but makes free use of techniques from all forms of print and image-making. |

Announcing our first online demo series!
Gel Plate Printing for Beginners, with Terry Garrett
We're so excited to announce the release of our first-ever online demo! In this two-part demo, printmaker Terry Garrett demonstrates the basics of gel plate printing and explains how to push the medium further with techniques such as ghost prints, stencils, found object printing, and much more! Gel-plate printing is a versatile, non-toxic form of printmaking that can be done entirely at home, with materials widely available at craft stores. Terry's free-form, explorative teaching style encourages experimentation and play. The resulting prints are many-layered and complex, and can function as stand-alone monotypes, backgrounds for further experimentation, or source paper for collages. The demo is just $50 for 3 months of access, and we've created a facebook group where students can connect with each other, share the work they create, and ask Terry any questions they might have!

Ann Kresge: Places/Spaces
June 4th-30th, 2021
|
In-Person Gallery Opening: June 4th at 5pm
"This retrospective exhibition is composed of work inspired by a sense of place. Many of these prints and artists’ books were created on site in these places and spaces. I am fascinated by people’s connection to geography. The patterns and impressions of places I have worked, lived, and visited inspire my art. These places include India, Japan, China, Egypt, Argentina and throughout the US. Rock formations, caves, canyons, earth’s rims and edges compel me. I think about ideas, forces and people gathering and dispersing. As a contemporary printmaker and book artist I think in paper, pattern, series, sequence, layers and interiors. I explore my sense of place in painting, drawing, and printmaking. My artists’ books are collaborations with poets and storytellers. I am interested in collaboration, interarts and books as objects." - Ann Kresge |

Find the "Ghost" in Ghost Prints
This one-day workshop will focus on ghost prints (a second, lighter print from an initial image) made from monoprints. Participants will learn how to create a monoprint, print it, and then use the remaining "ghost" image on the plate to create a new print. This method can create areas of ethereal midtones alongside very dark blacks and bright whites - the result is a delicate but striking image with a ghostly air.

What's in a Mark: an Exhibition of Prints Based on Mark-Making
September 4th - 30th, 2020
|
This exhibition brings together eight artists whose work share a common thread -- the expressive act of mark making. Each artist has created original hand-pulled prints using personal ‘signatures’ consisting of lines, dots, patterns, and textures in depicting their subject matter. The artists have chosen to approach their work through either playful exploration, methodical repetition, or a combination of both. The resulting images range from the spontaneous and intuitive, to controlled and precise marks on paper. They are intriguing records of intense interaction and aesthetic manipulation with the varied tools and processes of dry point etching, monotype, gravure, encaustic monoprint, and mixed media.
This exhibition features artwork by Krista Barrett, Christine Herman, Chuck Lathrop, Suzanne Marshall, Trish Meyer, Mary Sundstrom-Gramer, Dan Welden, and Pamela Wesolek. Join us for What's in A Mark? Virtual Reception & Artists' Talk! When: Sep 23, 2020 04:00 PM Mountain Time (US and Canada) |

Carol Felley - Rhythm of Resiliency
March 1st - March 29th, 2019
The artwork in "Rhythm of Resiliency" encourages us to step out of our usual frame of reference into a visual contemplation of the pairing of despair and joy within the grieving process. This collection of prints reveals images from Carol's inner realm using rhythmic marks, archetypal imagery, and colors and shapes that engage us through our senses. Complex landscapes of ostomy bags, part of her brother's medical treatments, transform to a simple urn, a metaphorical container for her loving relationship that is about to end. Totems adorned with images of bones and floral embellishments turn upwards towards the heavens and eventually become mourning dresses embellished with elements that represent her outward expression of grief.

New Mexico: Living Relief" is an exhibition of contemporary artists of our region dedicated to relief printmaking, including those working in the southern part of our state. From below the 34th latitude are prints from Fred Barraza, Phillip Parotti, and Chris Bardey, all of whom were prominent in Silver City during last year's Southwest Print Fiesta. This show also follows the relief exhibition at the Albuquerque Museum last year -- "The Carved Line: Block Printmaking in New Mexico" -- which was organized in part by Santa Fe printmaker Scott Parker, who is having a solo show in the main gallery. Albuquerque and Santa Fe artists featured include Henry Morales, Mary Sweet, Jan Vanderburg, Mike Kimball, and Karsten Creightney.

Scott W. Parker: 10 years in New Mexico, Linoleum block prints
“Scott W. Parker: 10 years in New Mexico, Linoleum block prints”: This exhibition features a collection of compelling and lyrical multi plate relief prints by Santa Fe artist, Scott W Parker. Parker endeavors to consciously use imagination and skill in the production of aesthetic objects using the medias of painting, drawing and linoleum block printing. The series of actions, decisions or operations culminating in the work of a visible hand made representation after solving problems and difficult situations is what has kept Scott Parker entertained and making images for decades.

Introduction to Copper Etching
August 12 & 13
This basic, introductory workshop provides students with all the information they need to create a rich line etching and aquatint using non-toxic methods. Etching is a marvelous technique for those who love to draw to take their art to a new level. Students will learn to prepare their plates, coat them with hardground, etch and print them. We will learn to use aquatint to create luscious grays similar to those seen in Goya’s etchings. This process was originated in the 16th century and was made famous by artists such as Rembrandt and Turner. This workshop is open to those who are just beginning or those who want to learn non-toxic methods of etching.
Class dates: August 12 & 13
Class time: 10 AM – 5 PM, includes lunch break
Class fee: $240+ tax, includes 6 x 4.5″ copper plate, 1 sheet of paper, and most printing materials
Instructor: Pam Wesolek
