Carol Felley: Tapestries

In traditional tapestries, the warp threads are thicker than the weft and made of coarser wool. All you can see are their ridges under the colorful weft threads. In the artworks in "Tapestries," the viewer is meant to view the warp and the weft of the artist's inner experience.
Most days, for the past three years, I have created artwork that allows and records my response to our world. The trauma of war motivates the choice of color and textures. The tenderness of what is innately human is visible in the layers of war-torn paper. Maps, babies and their parents, burnt faces, and bombed-out buildings manifest as reality. Using multiple printmaking processes, I have layered the complexity of my emerging feelings into a visceral reality. As I worked my personal history began to emerge and I incorporated images of New York City, my birthplace. Once on paper, I allowed the aesthetic and play of making art to immerse me in its spirit. I let the triumph of bravery, hope and tenderness fill the paper with colored patterns and brighter colors.
