Drypoint Workshops
Milk Carton Drypoint - Wait! Don't toss that milk carton!
One Day Workshop Wait! Don't toss that milk carton. Bring it to class for a fun, surprisingly sophisticated printmaking technique known as Milk Carton Drypoint. This technique is so affordable and low tech, great for classrooms or those who have wanted to try drypoint etching without breaking the budget. Drypoint itself is an acid-free, non-toxic intaglio technique, in which an image is incised into a plate (or matrix) using a sharp or hard-tipped tool, like an etching needle, X-acto knife, wooden sticks or even nails and tacks. The plate is inked up like a traditional etching plate, and printed on a printing press, resulting in a beautiful, rich, image with lush plate tone and bold lines. Milk Carton drypoint is special because the plate isn't metal, it's literally pieces cut from milk cartonboard! You can use everything from ice cream buckets to orange juice containers. In this course, you'll learn which materials work best, how to cut and shape plates, how to create areas of continuous tone and fine lines, and best of all, how to ink and print these unique surfaces. Class date: TBA Class time: 10 AM – 5 PM, includes optional lunch break Class fee: $120 + tax, all paper and materials will be supplied Instructor: Ren Adams, MFA |
Drypoint Intaglio
TBA This class is perfect for illustrators and people who love to draw who want to learn about printmaking. Drypoint is an acid-free, non-toxic intaglio technique that's been around since the 1400s, and it's still going strong. Images are incised into a plate using a sharp or hard-tipped tool, like an etching needle, creating lines and raised burrs that capture ink for printing. The plate is inked up like a traditional etching plate, and printed on a printing press, resulting in a beautiful, rich, image with bold lines. Various kinds of plates can be used, and we'll explore drypoint on copper, Plexiglas and aluminum. We will cover common materials used as drypoint plates (plexi glass and metal), how to make marks, building and developing tones and lines, inking, wiping, and printing your plates. Existing printmakers may bring in etching plates from previous projects and learn how to add drypoint lines to them!
