Mary Sundstrom: Gilding the Lily
May 6 - June 25, 2022
In her most recent work, Mary Sundstrom creates a body of prints full of excess and exuberance. Why would anyone “paint the lily” or “throw perfume on the violet?” For the pure joy of it! These prints put on display Mary’s mastery of her technique of watercolor monotypes, and every one of them exudes a sense of abundance and of “going over the top.”
Playing off the beautiful and natural patterns formed when watercolor washes are laid down and allowed to dry, she transfers them to dampened paper and runs them through the press. Mary riffs off of the shapes, layering them with drypoint, trace monotype marks and even gold leaf, to create images full of intriguing interplay of color, linear movement and flourish.
Inspired by the poured washes of color by artists Helen Frankenthaler and Hans Hoffman as well as the gestural linework of Cy Twombly, Mary seeks, as Catherine Kernan says, “to work in an abstract, improvisatory way, drawing on internalized experiences in a process of experimentation and controlled accident.”
In the end, the purpose here is to explore the constantly expanding possibilities of internalized experiences as they pour out on the paper in color, form, and line. Enjoy!
