Artist's Statement
“On the Borderline,” is group of photographs that has emerged as a theme over the past several years. At their most basic these images are Meditations on our mutable relationships with place. Organized around the fact of the horizon line, they explore the tensions inherent in the idea and function of this most basic of spatial elements. We move towards the horizon as a point of aspiration; it identifies our goals and dreams. At the same time the horizon is the boundary between earth and sky, a limiting line that can never be reached. It is both dynamic and static. It evokes a sense of infinite possibilities while providing us with our most elemental spatial structure and orientation. I’m hoping that these photographs evoke different aspects of this tension while providing a point of reflection on place and feeling.
A note on the prints: The images in this collection have all been printed using the process of Photo-polymer gravure. An intaglio plate is produced using a photosensitive polymer plate to which the original photograph is transferred. The color in the images is not derived from the original photograph but is applied in a free manner directly on the plate using Akua printing inks, a technique that is known as “a la poupée.” A sheet of Hahnemühle paper is placed on the plate and run through an intaglio press.
