- Intro to Screen Printing
Intro to Screen Printing
In this 10 hour, 2 day workshop you will learn methods of non-toxic, water-based screen printing (stencil printing) that will add an entire new set of tools and techniques to your printmaking practice. Topics cover the range of steps to complete a multi-color screen print from start to finish, and you will leave with two completed print editions.
On the first day you will learn multiple ways of creating the stencil, how to mix screen print ink, printing the image using the squeegee, and how to successfully address problems that may arise during the printing process, including techniques to properly register and trap colors.
Then you will apply what you have learned by printing a small edition of a pre-designed print using the various stencil techniques. This will prepare you for printing a small multi-color edition of your own design. Several methods to create your stencil artwork will be demonstrated and you will incorporate these into the design of your own print.
On the second day, we will begin with a review of your artwork films and a demonstration of coating and exposing your artwork onto a screen using photo-sensitive emulsion.
After the photo-emulsion screens have been exposed, you will prepare ink colors you will use in your own print edition. A final demonstration of creating additional colors using transparent overlays and a “painterly” masking technique will be shown before you begin printing.
After lunch, the remaining time will be for finishing your print edition with plenty of hands-on assistance from the instructor. At the end of the class, cleaning and reclaiming a screen will be demonstrated and we will conclude with a review of the prints created during the workshop.
