In this comprehensive two day workshop, participants will learn several styles of book binding, as well as explore how the format of a book can be a fruitful form of expression for printmakers. Participants will leave the course with several completed examples of book formats. The first book will be a codex binding in a hard cover. After that, we will complete two simpler styles of binding- drum leaf and pamphlet stitch. Materials will be provided, but any old or discarded prints may be used in the books.

Fred Hagstrom taught at Carleton College in Minnesota from 1984 to 2022. He has been working in book arts for over a decade, and has books in public collections in many institutions the U.S, Including the Library of Congress and the Smithsonian. He approached book arts primarily through his background in printmaking, with an emphasis on social issues as content.
