There is a delicate balance between success and failure that is important to my growth as an artist. Success helps to build confidence and momentum, and the failures often lead to growth. The monotype process has been instrumental in this sense. Monotypes allow for a type of instant gratification that is not available in other mediums, and they require from me a sense of grace to create without expectations. The spontaneous
nature of monotypes has helped me develop an attitude that the
unexpected outcomes are often my best opportunities to build on.
About the Workshop:
In this workshop you will create monotypes by applying and removing ink onto plexiglass plates with brayers, cotton cloths, brushes and other tools, then run the plates through an etching press to make original singular images. We will be using Cranfield Safe Wash etching and relief inks for this class. This workshop will include a combination of instruction and demonstration, with an emphasis on studio time. A range of additive and reductive monotype techniques will be covered with a focus on light, value, impulse,
and experimentation. We will also explore possibilities that develop after the initial monotype print is pulled by using the ghost left on the plate as a starting point for the next print. All levels are welcome from beginners to advanced with instruction tailored
to individual needs and goals. You are encouraged to bring source material to work from if you plan to create representational work, ideally something simple/not complex. Non-representational work will be supported as well.
About the Instructor:
Nanette Wallace’s monotypes feature an imaginative narrative that
fluctuate between elegant and uncomfortable. Her gestural figures are an intuitive and emotional response to the world around her, with an especially deep connection to water, light, and nature. She approaches her work with an emphasis on experimentation and intuition, allowing the spontaneous nature of the monotype to guide her.
Nanette Wallace spent her childhood playing in the fields and forests of her home in Oregon. Her vivid imagination, desire to create and nod to nostalgia stem from these early experiences. She fell in love with printmaking and figure drawing while completing her BFA at Oregon State University. She has had a long and varied career in the arts as an award winning graphic artist, illustrator, letterpress printer, painter, and printmaker. She now divides her time between her mountain retreat and home studio focusing primarily on monotypes, painting, and cats. Nanette’s work has been displayed in local, national, and International exhibitions and is represented in private, and public collections, as well international print publications.
