The circle motif is everywhere from Instagram accounts to advertising. I came naturally to the form when I discovered I was pregnant. It seemed logical that my unconscious mind was framed inside a pod of cells. That was two years ago. I have pushed through many variations within this round boundary and find myself now seduced again into botanical imagery. I love the way the floral becomes abstracted in the confines of the loop as if through a lens magnifying, compressing and focusing it into view. While the obvious botanicals are reimagined within the confines of the circle, the more abstract ideas find a certain grace and acceptance within the same parameters. These images go further away from the literal and are conceptually generated, often spurred by a title. In my mind they are referencing nature in an alternate perspective: up-close cellular orientations, magnifying hairs on a stem or crystallization of an element. Whatever the result, the process always originates in nature.
In twenty-four years I have not strayed far from a printing press. I own more copper than any one person should. I am a bona fide paper junky, collecting specimens from all over the planet. The fecundity of printmaking seems hard wired into my DNA. It is a demanding sport requiring physical stamina and concentration. I love that it has a technical side that is process driven, industrial, measured and exact. There is also the side of copper plate etching that is experimental, methodical, expressive and creative like. It is an honor to work in such a sensitive and powerful medium and keep this tradition of printmaking alive.
