In this introductory class, artists will learn about the art of relief printmaking and the unique challenges and remarkable advantages of carving wood. Woodcuts have a remarkable history dating back over 1,700 years, and have maintained relevance because of the beautiful, energetic, graphic qualities of the images they produce. Students will learn how to plan images for relief prints, how to carve and print a one-layer woodcut, and how to manipulate the physical and graphic effects of the woodgrain. This class is open to all experience levels - however, wood carving takes a moderate amount of strength. If you have a wrist or arm disability/injury, it may affect your carving ability. The instructor has carpal tunnel herself and carves just fine, but if you are worried, please contact us and we'll consult with you on whether the class is a good fit for you!
