Intro to Copperplate Etching

The amazingly versatile printmaker Pam Wesolek brings a beautiful 500-year-old artistic tradition to life in this intensive 2-day workshop. We will learn to create fine line etchings like those of Rembrandt and Dürer, and luscious, shaded aquatints like those seen in the etchings of Francisco Goya. However, unlike the printmaking methods used by the old masters, this technique is entirely non-toxic!

In this workshop, students will learn to prepare copper plates, coat them with hardground, and etch and print them. This workshop is open to those who are just beginning, or to those who are interested in learning new non-toxic methods of etching.

Class dates: March 4-5, 2023
Class time: 10 AM – 5 PM, includes lunch break
Class fee: $260+ tax
Instructor: Pam Wesolek

Beyond the Plain Photopolymer Print

In this long-awaited workshop, Lincoln Draper -- master of rich, subtle photopolymer prints- will divulge his secrets for creating detailed, mysterious photo polymer prints. Photo-based printmaking has been around for more than a century, but advances in the creation of affordable non-toxic photo-sensitive polymer plates has made this technique more accessible to photographers and printmakers alike.

This class will cover techniques for making finely calibrated transparencies from your digital images, and instructions on how to gauge exposure times to create perfect plates. Lincoln will cover basic inking techniques and then show how to create a high transparency  underlayer to add a subtle color enhancement of your photopolymer prints. Experience not necessary, but helpful. (Contact us for questions about this.)

All About Drypoint
with Mary Sundstrom

This class is perfect for illustrators and people who love to draw who want to learn about printmaking. Drypoint is an acid-free, non-toxic intaglio technique that's been around since the 1400s. Images are incised into a plate using a sharp or hard-tipped tool, like an etching needle, creating sharp lines with fuzzy, velvety edges. The plate is inked up like a traditional etching plate, and printed on a printing press, resulting in a beautiful, rich image with bold lines. Various kinds of plates can be used, and we'll explore drypoint on copper, Plexiglas and milk carton.

We will cover common materials used as drypoint plates (plexi glass and metal), how to make marks, building and developing tones and lines, inking, wiping, and printing your plates. Experienced printmakers may bring in etching plates from previous projects and learn how to add drypoint lines to them! No experience necessary and beginners are welcome!

Class dates: April  15-16
Class time: 10AM-5PM
Class fee:  $260 + tax, all paper and materials will be supplied

We will start with the press already set up and ready to print a solid block of color from a linoleum block. Students will be introduced to the press and take turns using the press to print on one side of their cards, which will be laid out on the rack to dry.

We will also talk about metal type, and student will set type from our type drawers.

Magical Layers in Linocut
With Noreen Richards

Guest instructor Noreen Richards wowed us with her submission to our 10th Annual International Print Exhibition, as we had never seen such dreamy, soft focus images made with linoleum. When we discovered she lives here in Albuquerque, we asked her to give a special *never before offered* workshop to share her magical way of printmaking. To make reduction prints- also called “lost plate” prints- the artist carves into the plate for each layer of color- resulting in a plate that cannot be re-used. In this workshop, students will learn to create small reductive linocuts using Noreen’s technique and Caligo Safe Wash inks. Students will be exploring ways to be expressive and “dreamy” with the medium. Noreen will focus on achieving depth, working with transparency, and color selections as she guides students in their exploration of the medium.  Some experience helpful, but not required.

Class dates: April  22-23
Class time: 10AM-5PM
Class fee:  $260 + tax, all paper and materials will be supplied

Softground Etching: Impressions & Texture

Explore soft ground etching with experienced etcher and printmaker  Pam Wesolek. This unique form of copper etching involves coating a copper plate with a soft acid-resistant wax. Impressions are then made in the wax by pressing leaves or found objects into it, or by drawing with various tools. This method creates rich textures and patterns, and can be used on its own to create prints with delicate lines and object impressions, or in combination with other etching forms such as hard ground and aquatint. Softground etching is a great technique for anyone who loves experimentation, and no prior etching experience is necessary!

Class Date: May 6-7, 2023
Class Time: 10am-5pm, with a lunch break
Fee: $260 + tax

Drawing through Print -
Monotype on Asian Paper
With guest instructor Sarah Smelser

Explore trace monotype, which allows an artist to work with the specific vocabulary of drawing while making one-of-a-kind prints. Done most effectively on dry Asian paper, trace monotype can stand on its own or be the beginnings of collages, mixed media works, and print installation. Trace monotype is portable and invites possibilities for plein air printmaking. Students will also learn to stencil print, counterproof, and ghost print to augment their images and add flat passages of color.

Accessible and unique, this technique is for artists of varied experience, from beginning drawing students to seasoned printmakers.

Class Date: Saturday-Sunday May 13 &14
Class Time: 10:00 am -5:00 pm

Narrative Relief Printmaking

Learn advanced techniques of relief linoleum printmaking in this two-day weekend workshop with guest instructor, Ramon Deanda. Deanda, a printmaker, muralist and sculptor, hails from the borderlands of Texas and draws from a rich cultural and family history to create his thought provoking often humorous art. In this workshop he will guide participants through his process of planning, designing and mark marking to create a 2 color narrative linoleum print.

In relief printing, the image is printed from a raised surface which was produced by cutting away non-image areas. This class covers several techniques including multi-plate and reduction printing. Artists will work with non-toxic water based inks and linoleum blocks.

In relief printing, the surface of linoleum creates the image, rather than the areas below the surface (as is the case with etching). The artist carves out their image using gouges and proceeds to roll ink onto the uncarved surface. Paper is laid over the block and the image is transferred using the pressure of a press or hand printed with a barin.

No experience necessary, but at least a basic understanding of relief printmaking recommended

Class dates: Saturday and Sunday, August 5-6
Class time: 10 AM - 5 PM, includes lunch break
Class fee: $260 + tax
Instructor: Ramon Deanda
