Donde Nace Todo

This multi-layer lithograph was created during a residency at La Ceiba Gráfica in Veracruz, Mexico. "Donde Nace Todo" portrays Ixchel, the Mayan deity of midwifery, fertility, medicine and more, using a rebozo that flows into fertile fields, to assist with a birth under the full moon. The earth symbolizes her womb as it's positioned in the center of the composition, and the land beneath gives a closer look into that world and the life there. 2 vessels pour water which flows through the birthing human and becomes a waterfall pouring into that same landscape where people are harvesting cacao, tending to the crops and where a quetzal flies overhead. Just at the base of the mountain range, hands reach out ready to catch and care for the new born child coming into the world. In the background you can see a canoe journey headed to the temple of Ixchel on La Isla Mujeres, and the top of the image is framed by medicinal plants. This print illustrates Ixchel bringing abundance and healing to the earth and all its creatures and aims to show how interconnected the spiritual and material worlds are. It was made to honor and to visually bring life to some Mayan traditions around birthing and spiritual beliefs for the feminine.
