Board Book with Cyanotype Pages and Letterpress Cover
This brand new exciting weekend workshop will introduce participants to cyanotype and letterpress printing, and to the artist’s book as a means to test and integrate mediums, images, and ideas. A loose prompt from the instructors (supplied via email beforehand) will guide thoughts about content and themes, and allow students to gather material or objects to use as “negatives.”
On Saturday we’ll collect botanical matter from the studio’s garden, coat paper with iron salts, and expose and develop prints in cyanotype’s iconic Prussian-blue-and-white color scheme. (We’ll use a light box in the event that sunshine doesn’t cooperate.) On Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning we’ll continue our cyanotype experiments while trading off in the letterpress area to set metal and/or wood type, and print our book covers. On Sunday afternoon we’ll assemble our books. Participants will leave with hands-on experience in cyanotype and letterpress, and eight-page board books. This basic mock-up structure, which opens flat, can be replicated to test ideas and techniques, collate prints or photographs, or tell written, visual, or mixed media stories.
